Reports To: Finance Director

About MIC

The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is a new entity that will deepen and expand the capacity, impact, and sustainability of California's grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation. MIC will support changemakers and organizations to catalyze innovations in movement strategy and power building, intergenerational leadership development, and our collective long-term sustainability and resiliency. Through a network of physical and virtual "centers," MIC will also contribute a key piece of infrastructure needed to fuel transformative structural change across California. This network will consist of new and existing centers serving hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of grassroots leaders in California. We aspire to raise the necessary resources to fuel the mission, vision, and programs of MIC.

The Movement Innovation Collaborative is focusing on three core strategies to deepen the power, coordination, and impact of the sector. In all three areas, we will create program and infrastructure supports that are additive and synergistic with existing movement efforts rather than duplicative.

  • Movement Strategy and Innovation
  • Intergenerational Leadership Development
  • Healing, Sustainability, and Culture

Position Summary

MIC is seeking a Finance & Grants Manager to support the development of a strong, sustainable internal financial and grantmaking infrastructure during a critical early phase of growth. Reporting to the Finance Director, this role will manage the day-to-day financial operations in partnership with outsourced accounting teams, while also developing and administering MIC’s grantmaking processes and systems. The ideal candidate is someone who can seamlessly toggle between financial details and grants administration, ensuring both operational integrity and grantee success. This is an ideal role for someone who combines strong technical ability with warmth, humility, and a collaborative work style.

This is a unique opportunity for a mission-aligned professional to help shape systems from the ground up in a collaborative, movement-centered environment.

Key Responsibilities

Finance Operations

  • Collaborate with outsourced accountants to manage the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and monthly close processes
  • Provide managerial support to the Finance Director in overseeing the financial operations of the MIC.
  • Develop and monitor budgets and financial projections, including grant-specific budgets
  • Allocate expenses to appropriate programs and grants; maintain and evolve the cost allocation framework
  • Generate internal and external financial reports (e.g., budget vs. actuals, cash flow, grant spend-down)
  • Produce and act on AP/AR aging reports.
  • Support the annual audit process and ensure financial compliance with federal, state, and funder regulations
  • Support the Finance Director in managing contract and procurement matters, including developing, tracking, and coordination of formal processes.
  • Document and improve finance policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Manage payroll process in coordination with the outsourced PEO.

Grants Management

  • Build and manage MIC’s grantmaking lifecycle from pre-award to closeout
  • Conduct applicant due diligence and ensure compliance with grant terms and reporting requirements
  • Analyze grantee budgets and financial reports; identify risk and provide feedback
  • Maintain accurate grant records and support the implementation of a grants management system
  • Act as liaison with grantees on operational and financial matters, supporting learning and collaboration
  • Work cross-functionally to align grantmaking operations with MIC’s broader goals and program strategies
  • Track and manage all incoming grant funds to MIC, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, timely reporting, and accurate revenue recognition.

Qualifications

  • Strong alignment with MIC’s mission, values, and culture
  • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit finance, grantmaking, or a related role involving budget management, compliance, or financial systems
  • Design and implement MIC’s grantmaking infrastructure, including systems, workflows, and policies, with an emphasis on equity and grantee support; manage the full grantmaking lifecycle from pre-award to closeout
  • Knowledge of nonprofit compliance requirements and financial regulations
  • Experience overseeing or partnering with accounting professionals/vendors
  • Proven ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and building systems while delivering day-to-day work
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the work of others
  • Excellent communication skills — able to translate financial concepts clearly to non-financial audiences
  • Experience working with remote or distributed teams
  • Strong emotional intelligence and ability to build relationships virtually with high capacity for collaboration
  • Communicates clearly, kindly, and proactively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Expensify, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with fund accounting, GAAP, and grant tracking tools
  • Previous experience in non-profit development
  • Experience with social justice or movement-based organizations is a plus

MIC is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences aligned with our mission.
